Party food should be easy to make, taste great, look good and be easy to eat. These super prawn and bacon skewers tick all the boxes for the perfect party nibble.
It’s party time! Therefore time to think about party food.
Thankfully we have graduated from the dreaded cheese and pineapple/pickled onions on sticks hedgehog things from the 1970s. But sometimes coming up with party food ideas can be daunting.
That’s when we head for the supermarket and end up with a lot of overpriced stuff instead. My prawn and bacon skewers are super easy to make and taste fabulous.
Ingredients
All you need are nice big raw prawns, go for Tiger prawns if you are in the UK. You need something big enough to wrap a piece of bacon around.
Fresh sage leaves, they really add an earthiness and depth of flavour to these simple little prawn skewers.
Streaky bacon is the best type to use for this recipe. I like to stretch my rashers of streaky bacon out by running the back of a knife over them whilst they are on the chopping board and holding one end. Then you just cut the rashers to length to wrap around the prawns.
Mushrooms, baby button or chestnut mushrooms are what you want here. You don’t want a huge mushroom knocking the prawns off the skewers so try to get mushrooms all the same tiny size.
Little wooden skewers. You can buy these from many of the big supermarkets or online.
How to make these
Simply rinse the prawns and devein them, you know, removing that little black line down the back. It’s an easy task with a small sharp knife.
Wrap each prawn with a sage leaf and then the stretched out piece of bacon.
The flavour of the bacon and the sage will penetrate the prawn and taste amazing.
Thread a button mushroom on to your wooden skewer and then push it through the bacon-wrapped prawn.
Heat oil in a deep pan so it is at least 4cm in depth and deep fry the skewers till the bacon is golden and cooked and prawns have turned pink. This should take about 3 minutes.
Let them drain on a piece of kitchen roll and they are ready to serve.
How many prawn and bacon skewers does this make?
I’ve only made 6 skewers here. Obviously, you can just multiply the ingredients to make as many as you want.
How to serve these skewers
You can serve your prawn and bacon skewers as they are or with a dipping sauce.
I like my own Aioli (garlic mayonnaise) on the side. Or why not try my whisky mayonnaise for a real touch of Scottish magic for Hogmanay. However, you serve them these little skewers are perfect party fodder.
This super easy recipe for prawn and bacon skewers is from my book A Wee Taste Of Scotland which is packed with Scottish inspired party food recipes that will make any party go with a swing.
