Why you’ll love this recipe

  • These are the easiest chocolate scones to make, you’ll have them on the table within half an hour and smiles all round.
  • Scones of any type are economical to make so these chocolate chip scones are a great wee treat that doesn’t cost much.
  • The taste – homemade scones are always way better than anything you can buy in the shops.

Now I thought it was time to share my simple chocolate chip scones which taste delicious and are super quick and easy to make.

Ingredients for chocolate chip scones

There are only a few ingredients in these chocolate scones and you probably have them lurking in your kitchen cupboards already.

Flour – I use self-raising flour (baking flour in USA) to make my chocolate scones. It gives them a nice lift.

Butter – I like unsalted butter so I know the salt content of my recipes. Make sure your butter is nice and cold to start with. Take it straight from the fridge when you are ready to start making your chocolate scones. I prefer to just add a pinch of salt to my recipes.

Sugar – Caster sugar or fine sugar in USA is the best here, don’t use any sort of brown sugar as it will give your scones a caramel like flavour which you don’t want.

Milk – any milk will do here, from whole milk to semi skimmed or a nut milk of your choice.

Chocolate – I use chocolate chips, dark chocolate. If you don’t have any chocolate chips then just break up a chocolate bar into little pieces.

The complete list of ingredients and full instructions for making this recipe can be found on the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

How to make chocolate scones

It honestly couldn’t be easier to make these simple chocolate chip scones, it is just like making any simple scones but you just add in those all important chocolate chips.

First thing to do is to chop up the chilled butter and rub it into the flour with a pinch of salt. Keep rubbing in gently till you have a breadcrumb like texture. That means that all the butter and flour is well combined and ready to make your scone dough.

Now add the sugar and mix well and toss in the chocolate chips, add the milk and stir well till it forms a dough and then squish it all together and turn it out on to a clean surface.

Roll out your scone dough to about 2-3cm thick and use a cookie cutter to cut out your scones. I have gone for small scones here using a 5.5cm cookie cutter.

When cutting out scones press down the cutter into the dough and pull it out in one swift upright move. Do NOT twist it when you lift it out as this will make your scones rise in a crooked way.

Place your chocolate chip scones on a lined baking tray and give them a wash with a little milk to help them get a lovely golden colouring.

Bake for approximately 12-15 minutes. Then let them cool on a wire cooling rack.

How many scones does this make?

I got 12 small chocolate scones from this recipe. Using a larger cutter will make for less but bigger scones obviously.

Storage

Scones are always best on the day they are baked but they will keep in an airtight box for a couple of days. You can easily freeze your chocolate scones for up to 4 months. Just defrost thoroughly and warm in oven for a minute or two before serving.

How to serve chocolate scones

I just serve my choccie scones with butter but my daughter likes to go all out on the chocolate kick by spreading them with Nutella or even homemade chocolate spread.
