mixed berries smoothie
this super healthy mixed berry smoothie is like summer sunshine in a glass no matter what time of year it us. Use fresh or frozen berries and get your day off to a super healthy start

Of all the smoothies I make this super healthy mixed berry smoothie has to be my favourite. The colour alone is so joyous, and the taste, well it’s more like a fun milkshake than something healthy. Wins for me every time!

Super Healthy Mixed Berry Smoothie

Smoothies make the perfect start to the day if they are homemade and packed with fruity goodness. This mixed berry smoothie certainly ticks all the healthy living boxes and will get your day off to a flying start especially at this time of year when those gorgeous summer berries are in abundance. If not make full use of frozen berries instead.

Eat healthy, be happy

A couple of years ago I went on a major health kick. I cut out gluten and wheat, sugar and even booze. Okay so I did lose some weight but I felt bloody miserable and it made not a jot of difference to the health issues I was trying somewhat unsuccessfully to address with all this cut-the-crap type eating.

All in moderation

I went back to eating bread (I like seedy, nutty breads and sourdough), use sugar in a much more limited way and am back on the vino and G&Ts and good quality black chocolate. Has this made any difference; bet your ass it has, I’m happier, don’t feel constantly deprived of the things I like and the health issues are now a thing of the past.

Smoothie making tips

Freeze your bananas. I always chop up my aging bananas (this is when they are fullest in flavour) and pop them into freezer bags. That way I can have a smoothie any time I like as I use  frozen bananas as the base for lots of my smoothie recipes.

If you don’t have a high speed food processor/blender then put the ice cubes into a plastic bag or wrap in a tea towel and bash them with a rolling pin to break them up a bit. Now put the broken ice cubes into the food processor/blender and make that super healthy strawberry smoothie. This tip will save wear and tear on your machine.

Ingredients

This mixed berry smoothie makes use of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and a few red currants as well as apple and banana.

The only other ingredients are a teaspoon each of flax seeds and chia seeds if you have them plus half a cup of plain yogurt and some ice.

How to make this smoothie

It is not so much of a recipe as a construction and blitzing blender job. So whazz yourself up this very berry smoothie and make a great start to your day.
