Yesterday I popped in to see my pals at the local antique shop. We always have tea and a chat and I have a rootle about in all the bric-a-brac and bits and bobs.
The boys had done a clearance on an old house the other day and had bought in some old games. I fell on the solitaire and card games like a shot. Even the boxes made me smile and want to play.
The prize though was the "Old Maid" games. There were two sets of this iconic card game. One very old with lovely part coloured drawings and quirky characters. These will be kept for art projects and I'll make good use of them.
The other set, well what can I say. Maybe some of the illustrations are just a tad politically incorrect, but the names of the characters are amazing.
There is Iva Lipstick, Cop Emoff, Bugs Boggs, Agonizing Sue, Yotta Fall, Caspar Hotstuff, Oswald Shy and Eric Faintheart, just to name some of the crew.
We had extra fun coming up with new names for characters we could add and who whould be what.
So what was I doing yesterday morning when I was meant to be at the bank and post office? Yep, there I was in the back room of the antique shop playing "Old Maid" with the boys. The hilarity levels rose by the minute. Just who was going to be stuck with Azz I Said or Hazel Hazzit, or no, no, no, quelle horror – Old Maid.
The tension rose, there might have been cheating, the best thing was the laughter. Hmmmmm you guessed it, who was the old maid, let's not even go there…….
