top tips for using honey at home

Honey has been used for thousands of years and not just as a source of food. Read on for my top ten tips for using honey.

ten top tips for using honey

Honey is one of the oldest products known to man. From ancient times it has been used to sweeten, to heal, to flavour and to calm.  What we in the modern world would boast as a Super Food and loudly proclaim its virtues as if we ourselves had invented something so perfectly natural.

Many think only of honey in terms of its sweetness and its eatable qualities, but there is more to the bumble bee’s bounty, the golden goodness can be used in so many ways and not just to keep Pooh Bear happy.

Here are Ten Top Tips For Using Honey At Home;

HANGOVER CURE

Honey contains a lot of fructose (natural fruit sweetener) which helps speed up the metabolism. Taking a couple of teaspoons of honey the morning after a heavy night can help shift your hangover a wee bit faster.

CHILL OUT

While honey can speed things up in moving a hangover it also has incredibly soothing qualities for the mind.

Calm – add a teaspoon of honey to your porridge in the morning. It will help boost the well known calming qualities of the oats and help keep you calm for the busy day ahead.

Sleep – Add a teaspoon of honey to a cup of chamomile tea to help you sleep at night.

ZIT ZAPPER

Honey has wonderful properties for the skin. Use it as a zit zapper. Just dab some honey on a spot and the antimicrobial qualities in the honey will heal that zit faster the natural way.

SORE THROAT

Honey is wonderful for a sore throat. It eases your throat quickly and easily. The quickest way to use honey for a sore throat is to just mix a tablespoon of honey with the juice of a lemon and sip to sooth your throat.

At night time make a hot toddy with honey, whisky, lemon juice and hot water.

FIRST AID

Honey is great for minor scrapes and scalds. It will protect, heal and sooth. Honey also helps to make scars less visible when used regularly over time.

HONEY SKIN SOFTENER

Rub honey into knees, elbows and heels to soften the skin. Leave for 30 minutes then rinse off. This will help get you holiday ready the natural way.

WEIGHT LOSS

Use honey instead of sugar to aid in weight loss. It speeds the metabolism instead of just giving a sugar spike as white refined sugar does. If you have to use a sweetener use honey.

BATH TIME

If you live in a hard water area you can soften the water by adding a tablespoon of honey under the hot tap when you are running your bath.

HONEY FOR ENERGY

Forget those fizzy energy drinks, just take a tablespoon of honey before working out to get the great benefits of its natural glucose that is released into the brain and bloodstream without all the gassiness and chemicals found in those energy drinks.

FACIAL MOISTURISER

Honey is a fabulous moisturiser and cleanser. It heals irregularities and also seals in moisture. to help the skin plump up and have a youthful glow.

So there you are, my ten top tips for making the most of honey at home, from sleep to zits, hangovers to bath time.
