Bunting is the b-all and end-all in the UK just now. You can’t walk down any street without being assailed by the fluttering stuff in everything from the traditional Union Flag, red, white and blue, to country vintage pinks and lemons, blues and greens. Yes bunting is a buzz word.
For Idgy’s sleep over I decided to deck the house with loads of bunting, but real DIY recycling bunting that would require NO SEWING, no hole punching and no gluing.
This is it, how to make your own bunting!
We raided our old T Shirt drawers and found anything that could be snipped up. Triangles were of course first choice in the shape department, but we didn’t let any fabric go to waste, we made strips as well.
Some of the triangles we just knotted on to the ribbon (use string, ribbon, whatever you have to hand) on the two shorter corners. Others didn’t quite have enough give in the fabric so we made a small 3cm/1″ cut into the corner and used those ends to tie a little knot over the ribbon. You have to do a double knot doing it this way.
We mixed up the fabric flags and interspersed them with just strips of fabric knotted on to the ribbon.
The result was yards and yards and yards of jolly bunting.
Okay it is still decorating the living room as someone (who me!?) hasn’t been bothered to take it down yet. But it will be in the garden by this weekend.
Make your own bunting, it’s easy! All you need are old T shirts, a pair of scissors and some ribbon or string.
Go on, get bunting!
