Yoga, it’s all about balance. I blame Phoebe of course she has got me into this to stretch the muscles etc and chill me out.
I’d been moaning (who me?) after running that my legs ached and felt tight. “You need yoga” said Phoebe. I’d hoped that last word might have been something like Vodka, but no it just had to be yet another exercise routine, just my luck.
“It’s great for fitness, tones you up, chills you out and stretches your muscles” sounds perfect, what more could I want? Keen readers might just remember that this time last year I went to a Yoga class in the village, but as I was heading off to France the next day for the summer, I never attended another class, I was no great loss apparently. So here I was again with the Y word in front of me, I did the only thing possible in the circumstances – I headed for Amazon (have I mentioned my little amazon addiction lately?) and bought “The dummys guide to yoga” on dvd.
The dvd arrived and I ripped it open with the enthusiasm of one who very obviously hasn’t tried the downward facing dog yet. The young girl doing the demos had the calm facade one always equates with yoga, you know that sort of serene half smile as if they know something wonderful that you don’t.
This is yoga at it’s most basic and even at that I have found it a bit of a challenge. Oh don’t get me wrong, I can stand nice and tall just like a Mountain, I can even do a pretty fair Tree for at least 2.5 seconds till I fall over. But oh dear my stretchiness is pathetic. My heels go nowhere near the ground in Downward Facing Dog, I look more like a lopsided table, and when it comes to “just grab your foot and let your head fall forward over your knee” – are you kidding me, my head can’t get down there and I can barely reach my knee for less my foot, uuuueeerghhhh !
Phoebe is good at this. When I asked how to do a pose the other day she just flowed perfectly into a Sun Salute at the side of the Clyde. Everything was so smooth, she moved from one pose to another with a fluidity that had me positively green with envy.
So here I am every morning with my dvd, my mat and a secret smile on my face as I contemplate the world from Cat pose.
Any tips would be more than welcome.
