Poppies, red poppies everywhere! Giant red poppies that leap into life as soon as the sun shines.
Colour so strong and vibrant one can be fooled into thinking they will last forever.
Alas no, their strength of colour belies a fragility of nature that finds these beauties falling fast.
I love poppies, they are sunny and bright and remind me so much of Spanish dancers, flamenco ladies in stunningly gaudy dresses full of frills and frivolity. Dancing and kicking their heels. Pulling the attention, catching the eye.
Who can ignore such drama, such passion?
Spanish dancers and holidays. A little girl sitting cross legged at the side of a stage in some Spanish resort oh so many years ago. Mesmerised by these dancers. By the colour, the music, the heat and the spectical. At the end of the show the dancers would bring the children on to the stage and show them how to dance. I just wanted to touch the dresses, the stunningly vivid poppy red dresses. like those petals, all rich vibrancy. I had never seen anything so beautiful.
Such a long time ago, another lifetime.
How things change.
People come, people go.
Memories last forever.
I photograph poppies whenever I see them. There is such a short window of oportunity for this as these beautiful blooms only last until the ellements gang up against them and pull them down.
But even in their fallen state they have beauty and power to draw me in. I am the one on her knees snapping away trying to keep the memories of the way they those petals divide, flutter to the ground. To me a fallen poppy is just as beautiful as a new, robust healthy bloom that stands tall and shouts for attention.
They are still the Spanish dancers. Still dramatic, passionate and beautiful.
Only now they are relaxed at the end of thier show. Sitting down with skirts flouncing out around them, the flashing eyes and stern expressions that go with the flamenco dance are forgotten and smiles and kindness radiate amoungst the colour.
Red poppies take me back in time. They take me to Spain.
Where do flowers take you?
Is there a flower that makes you immediately think of something else, something completely different?
Please share, I can’t be the only one who thinks like this, can I?
Have a great weekend.
