When you are trapped on the sofa life moves in a different way from that which you are used to. I can't quite beleive that less than a week ago I took these photos, yes even this bathroom shot, just to prove I was there. I was staying with friends, I was out and about, I was Doing. Now I am not doing anything.
I am looking at my photos of goodies I bought at Brocante and I imagine myself back there in sunshine searching for memories in other peoples junk. This old Catholic missel was one of my finds this time. The little book in itself was a treat for the eyes, but imagine my surprize and joy when I opened it up and found the old bookmarks, the personal touches that made that book special and personal to one being.
The most exciting find for me tho' was this leaf. Who put it there all those years ago? Was it just an idle find that was being used simply as a place marker? Was it picked fresh and being pressed within the pages of this precious book for future use in some long forgotten project? Or was it a relic from the past where people would use Costmary (often referred to as Bible Leaf) or Bay leaves to tuck into pages and keep these most treasured books free from the insects that would steal them away word by word.
This time I was searching for books, papers and maps. Paperwork of the past. This colourful yet faded paperback caught my eye. nothing very special inside, but oh what a cover. The delightful face peeping out from a viel of bubbles, or is it tiny cake crumbs, is she part of a cocktail glass, is that a fabulous cup cake, or is she just a pretty lady in a huge fondant style hat, you choose. Birds singing, romantic lamplight and twinkling stars, and is that the windmill from that famous club in Paris. Whatever, it is picture to lose your imagination in, a picture of dreams.
Papers in books and papers in maps. I bought lots of maps, from this old map of Paris to piles of vintage route maps of every region of that huge and wonderful country, France. The kind of maps you wrestle with in the car. So neatly folded at the start of the journey, such a tangled mess by the end.
What do I want these maps for. Aha, a new design idea, something to play with, something to think about. at least I can think on the sofa.
Thanks for the comments yesterday re my book writing. It has been something on my mind for years now. Last year I planned to write a herb book, something that showed others how to craft with these beauties, how to really enjoy them. I got books on how to write a book (you know me and my book addiction), how to write a book proposal, how to Get It Done. I even got to far as sending out query letters to publishers, three in fact and gathered rejections all round. Friends said I should write a funny book, not a crafting piece. I have tossed ideas about and thrown many out. I have started again and thought and rethought. Now from my enforced nest on the sofa I really have time to think things out and actually do it. All those pages of notes, all those files within the laptop. They are now all rushing out and being reorganised, reset, replaced and generally giving me a restart.
What am I going to do from my position here on the sofa? Well, I am trying to do two things (yes gals, I am multi-tasking as only a woman can) I am putting together my herb book, much revised and rethought, something completely different from my original idea of a year ago, and I am also sorting through my blog for stories to add to my notebook of ideas for a novel – well a funny/sad/journal/story. We shall see if anything ever comes of this. At least for the time being it gives me purpose and goals that are viewable from my position on the sofa. Yes I will write.
Must dash can't miss Jeremy Kyle. (relax only joking)
