Brassempouy is a tiny village not too far from here. Pretty unremarkable as French villages go; usual small streets, geraniums and faded shutters and a pretty church.
But this little village holds a treasure, a real treasure, something found many years ago that is precious and old, very, very old.
It is this little head. Barely one inch tall it is carved from mammoth ivory and is over 25,000 years old. This is not the real McCoy, for the value of this little lady is beyond price as she is the oldest sculpture ever found that bears human form.
She has friends too, a tad younger and a whole lot bigger. These ladies are enough to make us all feel rather slim, so can only be aplauded for their efforts.
Obviously Kate Moss would have been out of a job in this era.
I love this one, I think of her as the 'Bathing Beauty' all seal like curves leaping for the waves.
Idgy more interested in fossils and giant bear skulls.
Tiny treasures, hidden gems. Pieces of history in little French villages.
