After all my worries about the weather I did not need to don those ruby slippers afterall! The weather stayed dry (almost) and tho' windy it didn't put off the villagers at all.
Our little village was dressed in all her finary, with balloons tied everywhere,
and bunting fluttering in the wind.
There was a Gala Queen and her consort
fancy dress contests for all ages
a scarecrow competition (not to be confused with the fancy dress of course!). These guys were seen in all manner of poses popping up all over the village over the weekend. From pirate style scarecrows and even a Simon Cowell lookalike to this more traditional guy.
Birds of prey on display
fun and games
a pipe band of course
demonstrations of horse shoeing and pony rides too
the crowds were out and the sun did her best to keep everyone warm and almost always dry
competitions for all the children. Idgy's 'Tattysaurus' won the veggie animal contest
fab food in the form of a hog roast
boys toys on display
ladies of strength
winning their class in the Tug-of-war
and there were places to buy things. Here is my trusty assistant manning my stall. She discovered that you could wriggle under the tent flap to escape, didn't see much of her after that…..
All in all in was a lovely day. I think the whole village turned out to support the event as it was the first Gala Day for ten years. Here's hoping they do it all again next year.
So here we are on Monday morning. It is all done, dusted and over with. Weather worries came to nothing and everyone had a good day. The field was cleared and the good ladies of the countryside are back in there just lazing around. Did it really happen? It all feels a little like Brigadoon.
