According to the health chiefs who guide our every thought word and deed, breakfast is the single most important meal of the day. Yet most people think of it as their least important food fest and just grab something quick on the run.
Okay, lets be honest. Are you a healthy wholemeal muesli kinda gal, a sugar puffs sweetie, or a 'Oh God is that the time, slurp down the scalding coffee' character?
In the winter I admit to enjoying the odd bowl of porridge, and not just because of the rather attractive kilted gent on the box.No, I did find that it staved off the hunger pangs till lunchtime. Thus avoiding that mid morning chocolate fix or biscuit bonanza.
Idgy on the other hand is much like a magpie when it comes to breakfast cereals. Does it have something free inside? Is there a silly sticker or plastic toy? Better still, something shiny! Doesn't matter it is obviously better value as there is 'something with it'. I tend to disagree on this one and we often have an undignified (what moi!) tussle at the cereal isle in the supermarket.
Although I like the heartiness and warmth of porridge in the winter, and no, I don't keep it in a drawer in true historic highland style, I don't like the idea of it at this time of year.
Solution; use apple juice to soak your porridge oats in a bowl the night before. Come morning there is a flavoursome base for your healthy and seriously tasty breakfast. Now add a glug of any yogurt on top. Only got Postman Pat fromage frais, so what, go for it! Next raid the fruit bowl for anything that hasn't completely gone to mush and welded itself to the bottom of the bowl. Finally toss in a handful of mixed nuts/fruit and nuts, anything you like, just resist temptation to use chocolate covered peanuts.
Now plonk yourself down, imagine your are in a bright sunny place with a lovely view and no pressure at all. Yes, you can do it! Now dip in that spoon and enjoy. Promise you it tastes great and will keep you away from the biccie tin all morning.
Have a nice day!
