Yesterday I went to India and stayed at The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Well not really, I just went to the cinema in Lynwood butit was truly marvelous.
If growing old disgracefully is the way you would want to go, then this film is a Must See for you too.
It has an all star cast including the amazing Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nyghe, Penelope Wilton (her perfect line to her husband being “When I want your opinion I’ll give it to you”) and Celia Imrie. They are all ‘of a certain age’ and through differing circumstances find themselves drawn to an adi in the paper for this new Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in India where they can enjoy a whole new life.
The hotel is run by a fabulously exuberant young man who just doesn’t have a clue. A dreamer with high hopes and a huge imagination.
There are intertwining stories of his love life, his family issues and of course all the stories of the new guests who have travelled all the way from England to this mad colourful and very noisy place.
They are all so out of place that they find themselves doing things they never would, taking up a job, finding a lost love, meeting a new love, finding courage and building new lives. There is great hilarity but some wonderfully touching moments that melt your heart.
Being India means the setting itself couldn’t be more colourful and vibrant. You are feasting on colour here and it will cheer your day to have your brain infused with such visual heat. The tumble down hotel is breathtakingly beautiful but falling apart. The noise and hustle is an assault on the ears. Personally for me this would be sheer hell. Send me to warmth and colour but with a lot less people, maybe a Greek Island would be nice…..
If you want a bit of sheer escapism and a jolt of fun and colour go see this film whenever you can. I saw it yesterday on my way home from visiting my folks. The cinema had a showing on Sunday morning – perfect, just me and 6 others all with our huge mugs of coffee sitting back and enjoying another world while the real one outside is only just coming round to the realities of the day.
What did you do at the weekend?
