I’ve been thinking a lot about blogging lately. You see I’ve been doing Holly Becker’s Blogging Your Way course and that means I have been living and breathing blogging for the past month. I have loved it and learned SO much.
There have been lessons in everything from photoshopping your images for arty layouts to speaking from the heart, creating podcasts to making your own online magazine. This latter was right up my street and I am so excited about making my own online mag – can’t wait!
We were asked to define what blogging meant to us and I thought I’d share my thoughts with you. I’d love to know what it means to you too. Maybe you write a blog, maybe you don’t – what does the writing or reading mean for you?
My first blog started in 2008 as a business blog. I can hear you falling off your seats from here! Yes a friend of mine who also had a craft business (I was making all my scenty goodies for Dream Acres at the time) was really gung ho about this blogging for business stuff and said it was a great way to bring in customers.
It was for her, she now employs lots of people and sells to shops worldwide, she has a big business. She blogged in a businesslike manner right from the start. Every post was a Look at me, Look at my latest product, Oh look yet another new product. Well I’m sorry, I tried that but I had the ominous spectre of my Dad on my shoulder constantly reminding me “Nobody likes a showoff”. I just couldn’t do it.
My blog became more of a chat space where I recounted tales of everyday life here on what I fondly call Walton’s Mountain. There were pictures of flowers, my animals, anything that stood still long enough for the camera to snap. There have been happy funny posts and horribly sad posts. There have been excited posts when I’ve been falling over myself to get digits tapping on the keyboard fast enough, and times when the damn thing has been sodden with tears.
My blog has been from the heart, I need no lessons in that department.
My blog has been a great source of contact for me. It has been there (and the wonderful readers of course – YOU) at times when I thought I would go under with the weight of the world. When My Mum and brother were both so seriously ill at the same time and I was so very lost. Recently with my mum’s horribly slow decline. The blog was there, you were there.
But why do I blog nowadays? I blog because I love it. I was always a sharer, give me a box of choccies and I open it up and offer them around, even as a greedy kid I offered those sweets around. I love show and tell, guess that is why I write books, take photos and enjoy my spots on TV and Radio so much. It is sharing, sharing knowledge and experiences, hoping it helps others in some small way.
Doing this blogging course has made me really look at my blog, change things here, move things there. Try out new layouts and fiddle with photos. It is showing me how to keep things fresh, and, I hope, interesting. But it has also shown me that the thing I do, that show and tell, does have a place. While I go in the media waving the banner for home hints and natural remedies, time saving old fashioned ideas and modern twists for traditional hints, I rarely put these on the blog. Suddenly I realised that I want to get snappy with the camera and ramp up my home hints here. So you’ll have noticed that I posted about last weeks BBC Radio show on keeping bugs at bay, and yesterday a wee hint on sharpening your scissors. Well those things are me, they are what I talk about and write about, so now they will be a bigger part of the blog.
There will be weekly Home Hints, a weekly Recipe/Baking Day, I want to make more of the things I actually do. I’m still fiddling about with the look of the blog. I would love your feedback on that. I put up this new banner LIVE HOME LUNCH last week just to get a feel for it. I feel that is what this blog is all about – LIVE -living an everyday sort of life up here on Walton’s Mountain with my mad furry frinds, wicked weather and tales of the countryside, running, and my family and friends – HOME- Those home hints and ideas for making your personal space that wee bit better and maybe even a bit more natural without breaking into a sweat about it – LUNCH- well food of course, I love food and sharing my recipes and ideas, lunch? Nah, food all day really but lunch kind of fitted better.
What do you think of that for a title?
Well I have waffled on a bit here this morning. I’d love to know what blogging means to you.
