If you haven’t got plans for this weekend then can I make a wee suggestion, go see “War Horse” if it is on at a cinema near you. Be warned though, take the tissues, there may be some sobbing involved.
Idgy and I went to see it last weekend with Sue and Allan. One of those lovely evenings where it all spreads out beautifully, the meet up, the meal out and then the movies – perfect.
Anyway, the film itself – Stephen Spielberg worked his usual magic with the writings of the great Michael Morpego (and I have probably spelled that wrong, sorry) and created a 2 1/2 hour film that carried you along every hoof beat of the way.
I have to say I hated the boys father, he reminded me of the dreadful Duplessie (oops another spelling crisis) from the Sunday night show ‘Wild At Heart’, sorry but these men just drive me batty. Anyway peeps on with the story…
The horse goes from Devon to France via all sorts of machinations and moves of chance. The lives (and deaths) of the people that touch his life are chronicled in a way that pulls at the hardest of hearts. The senselessness of mans inhumanity to man, the love of man for his fellow man (and animal), the power of love.
It’s all there.
Mud, blood, noise and fear. The horrors of war. The scale and enormity of the carnage. The smallness and the closeness of humanity and the tiny details that make up life.
This is all about tenacity, hope, dreams and survival. It’s an epic and an adventure.
Mr Spielberg brought it all together and had us leaving the cinema worn out and maybe just a little more thoughtful.
Go see it if you haven’t already.
Have a great weekend, oh and by the way the February Book Giveaway will be launched on Monday, don’t miss your chance to win another great book free.
