Bits and bobs, bits and pieces. Old things. One man's junk is another man's treasure. Pieces of the past, your past, my past, some stranger's past life.
Brocante and Vide Grenier (which literally translates as 'empty attic') are the flea markets of France. Brocante has more antiques etc and Vide Grenier is a tad more basic.
Throughout the summer months they spring up in every village no matter how small. They are a day out and much anticipated. Children help their parents and set up stalls with their toys and games jostling for space with parent's attic finds.
I love these fairs, both large and small. I go whenever I am over in France and I love the hunt for goodies. Delving through boxes, riffling stacks of old papers, and going round and round again to double check that you haven't missed that one perfect little piece that you 'were always looking for'!
Whenever I am at these fairs I buy so many bits and pieces. Things that catch my eye. Do I need them, no. Will they always fit in with my decor etc, no. I just love all these old bits and pieces of the past. I imagine their past lives, what stories could they tell. Fanciful I know.
How many times was this case packed? Where did it go? What happened on its journeys, in it's lifetime of travel? Did it just pootle about round small towns and villages in the south of France, or did it make it to the sparkling lights of Paris, or out of the country and around the world.
Your imagination and not just your wallet can run wild at a brocante in France.
In my 'Shop' page I have put up a page of 'Vintage Finds', bits and pieces (the small things that can be posted!) that I buy in fairs and think others might like to own too. Often I buy things that are of little use in their own right, but when you place them 'just so', or put them with something simple (like a little bunch of lavender) they suddenly become a treasured piece of the past. A little 'prop scene' on a shelf.
I'm so glad the vintage page is proving popular already and some of the goodies are already winging their way to pastures new. I'll be updating this page every month, and will mention when I do this on the blog.
Have a nice day wherever you are.
