On saturday when I was driving through to visit Mum and Colin I got stuck in a huge traffic jam in Glasgow. Nothing unusual in that, afterall this is the M8 and it thrives on car chaos. However this was a biggie, a 3 lane closedown and right on the intersection I use to get to the TV studios. I made a mental note to leave early on Tuesday and take different turn off.
You're impressed by my forethought I can tell.
So yesterday I set off for STV studios with an hour to spare, "just to be on the safe side". Well lo and behold, wouldn't you just know it – the 3 lane closeure was gone. The highway was open – Good Lord, the trusty British workmen had done their job, the road was open, THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC JAM.
Great, excellent. Normally I would be thrilled, no, joyous, at such news. I was now one hour early and traffic is flowing like a stream. Can't find a slow lane anywhere, every red light is a green one. I am whizzing towards my destination like a moth to a flame, too early, too early.
Rather than go straight to the studios I decide to stop at a hotel with coffee bar just opposite on the other side of the Clyde. The sun is shining, the sky is blue. Let's take some photos.
All the pix showing the funny roof are of the famous "Armadillo" building, an iconic landmark. something to be pointed out to tiny person in back of car to make boring car journies slightly less boring. "Yeah mum, the Armadillo again" – oh how I recall that sweet little angelic voice of my daughter all those years ago.
Anyway I snap away, above the TV studios from my vantage point over the river.
The wiggly bridge over the Clyde. This is a nice way to kill time, coffee, sunshine and camera, minutes fairly whizz by.
Suddenly I remember the time and what i'm doing in Glasgow in the first place. Hop smartly into the car and whizz (oh doing so much whizzing today) over the bridge to the studios.
As ever the afternoon is fabulous. I feel like part of the team now. We all chat, catch up on news, do make up, rehersal, have coffee, laugh and enjoy jokes, then it's Show Time. Live TV, fast and furious, go, go, go. Everything happens so fast, there's a buzz in the air. Oh no, there's a fly in the studio, keep it away from the cameras, don't laugh but watch for the fly.
Winter scents and pot pourri. Making simmers and heating chafing dishes. Using the cooker this time. This is a creature with a mind of it's own, watch it doesn't get too hot, create smoke, set off alarms and sprinklers. Have lunatic vision of my chafing dish setting off the sprinklers and us all getting soaked live on air. Please don't happen. It doesn't, the place smells great. See the show by visiting the STV web site and following the links to yesterday's show (I'm on part 3 as usual).
Time flies…… Day done. Leave the studio as sun doing down, the Armadillo looks different in this light. I have plenty time to photograph it from the car window as I am well and truly stuck in traffic. I limp from one huge jam to another, it takes an hour and a half to get home.
Sing along to Will Young, sit back, relax. Can't do anything about it. Actually have to laugh at all my traffic shenanigans today. Other drivers must think I'm a nutter grinning at the wheel.
Now before I forget. Mr grasshead of yesterday's post. Just for you Nan, Idgy will make a new grasshead this afternoon when she gets back from school and we'll photograph this amazing creation taking shape before our very eyes. Watch out tomorrow for this fab "How To". How's that for a promo, betch can't wait……..
