PICKLED ROMANESCO

PICKLED ROMANESCO

Ok first question, what the hell is Romanesco? Romanesco is that strange almost other worldly (martian possibly) looking cauliflower that has spiky fleurettes instead of the usual rounded ones. It is very popular in France and is now readily available in the UK in larder supermarkets and farmers markets.

Pickled Onions

Pickled Onions

Pickled onions are a great Brittish staple. You just can’t imagine the classic ploughman’s lunch without pickled onions gracing the plate. They are the perfect addition to any cold meat or cheese platter too.

Salt Block Pickles

Salt Block Pickles

I’ve cooked and prepared food on many surfaces, from kitchen tables to griddle pans, stove tops and chopping boards to cool chilled marble so perfect for pastry. One thing I had never prepared/cooked any sort of food on was a salt block. For me salt has always been seen as a seasoning. A wonderful foodstuff…

Pickled Cucumbers

Pickled Cucumbers

Summer – gardens – picnics – tea parties – cucumber sandwiches. It all kind of follows on one into the other. Pickled Cherries

Pickled Cherries

Cherries mean summer time for me. Way back in the dim and distant past that was my youth cherries were only ever available during their short growing season within the UK, they didn’t just appear in the supermarkets all year round in the magical way they do nowadays. Oh no, back then cherries were special….

Sugar Free Pickled Radishes

I’m back from my wonderful week in France feeling refreshed and just a tad sad to be back in the land of wind and rain and a definite shortage on the rose front! We were blessed by good weather and enough sunshine to break out the shorts and sit by the pool soaking up the…

Spiced Pickled Beetroot

Spiced Pickled Beetroot

I adore beetroot, there is something so rich and satisfying about a root vegetable that has a real depth and flavour all its own yet marries so well with lots of other foods, complimenting and highlighting the others flavour and never stealing the show. For me pickled beetroot is a real staple of the larder…
