Pull up a chair, grab a coffee and let’s chat. No recipe today, no lists, no hints or tips, just a wee bit of a chat from me up here on Walton’s Mountain.
Why the photos of Idgy? Well on Monday my girl starts her prelims, her first major school exams. In my day it was the O Grade prelims and boy was I worried. You see I was never the scholar, I was more the class joker, the artist and the dreamer.
Herd me into the biology lab, the science lab or, God forbid, the maths class and I was in a freak-out panic, a complete woose, next to useless. Actually I ought to add another classroom to that list, the history class, oh boy did I excel myself in that one!
The arithmetic prelim was my lowest point, I have the dubious honour of being the only girl in my school ever to get ‘unclassified’ for that exam (that means I just about got my name right and possibly the date but busted out on the entire paper!). Not a proud moment and definitely not something my parents ever boasted of.
Anyway there is My Girl a gorgeous fifteen year old now about to sit her first biggy exams. My heart goes out to her. She is so much more dedicated than I ever was. She can study and make clever little reminder cards about points she is worried about. She has a study schedule and her friends all compare study notes and actually apply themselves. I just remember being far more devoted to the likes of the delectable David Cassidy than any ideas of school work.
She has goals and talent and I am so proud of her. She really is Saffy to my Edwina, my darling alter ego.
But it is not just exams that she has on her plate just now. Remember the lump on her neck that plagued her all last year? Well even though it is benign we still have to get the thing removed, so my girl has to go into hospital soon for the op. The surgeon says he will make it within the next month after her exams finish.
So there she is dreading the exams and dreading the time after them. I keep spreading the only advice I know to be true – do your best and forget the rest.
So that’s us up to date on the news of Idgy. Has anything else been happening up here on the hill?
No, no, no more deaths in the chicken department. Come on there are only 2 left afterall. No, something far more exciting.
On Christmas Day we had our very own little Christmas Miracle – an egg! Yes friends, after 3 months of lolling about doing bugger-all and just dropping off like flies my chickens have finally decided to maybe do something a tad constructive. Possibly thinking that their diminishing numbers could be something to do with their lack of creativity and usefulness in the world.
For whatever reason they have started laying again and the little beauties (yes even the grey one that I am convinced is a raptor) are giving us one egg each almost every day.
This has all been cause for much celebration and jubilation. Oh yes you can tell we live a quiet life out here in the wilds can’t you! Christmas and New Year were nothing in comparison to the Chicken And Egg Drama.
Actually the festivities were good for us. Nothing exciting just time at home together with good food and relaxation, visiting friends and catching up.
Idgy studied and I made my own notes. We have moved into the new year both with purpose. She is growing up and stretching her wings making me feel a tad old but very proud. I am determined to embrace this year of 2014 and stretch my wings too.
Wishing you all the best for the New Year…..
