Talk about responsibility, taking on someone else's health care, their lifestyle, livlihood and, oh God the worst of all, their watering!
Yes Idgy and I have been looking after Eueun's Mr Grasshead for a week whilst he was on holiday with his Mum and Dad. When he had trotted in with the bald seed filled sock with googly eyes (3 of course) and natty scarf, all rammed in a plastic cup and waved a little sheet of instructions, my heart fairly sank.
It sank in remembrance. Mostly in remembrance of the school mouse that I had to care for way back when I was at school. Of course I would care for mousy for a week, no problem, how difficult could mouse sitting be. Tricky, let me tell you, tres tricky. The mouse escaped, twice. The cat thought this was a natty new form of meals on wheels. Oh no, not easy taking on someone's pet.
"Er Mum, it's not a pet, it's a Mr Grasshead, stop stressing". Me stressing, heaven forbid! I just have visions of Mr Grasshead never sprouting a hair (sorry grass), his seeds will burst out, eyes fall off, he'll be kidnapped by the ferret, knocked over by the cats. I just know something dreadful will become him. He is such an innocent, he deserves a better life……
Lookee here, I needn't have worried. Mr Grasshead survived, and with a lovely crop of "hair" to prove it.
In fact he was proving such a runaway success that Idgy decided she wanted to have a go too. We now have our own rather fetching Mr and Mrs Grasshead in the kitchen. Ok so why does the lady Grasshead have one eye, a lurid grin and a cocktail umbrella – hmmmmmmm, is this a message.
Yesterday Mr Grasshead went home to Eueun. He was thrilled by the fabulously rich and luxuriant locks his grassy green friend had sprouted. The "caring" had worked. There had been no disasters, no reconstructing something to "look like Mr Grasshead" after some gristly incident involving an animal.
Oh yes, I'm glad Mr grasshead's holiday here has been a success. I'm sure his two new friends "Lawn" and "Mowa" will have green bushy hair soon and then the exciting part – haircuts!
